The Ixil territory is a vast area located in one of the most remote and beautiful parts of Guatemala. Over the years, this region has become isolated from the rest of the country, not only because of the terrible communication links, but because of its own history and culture. The people have had to survive under the harshest conditions of misery and abandonment, working on faraway farms and plantations, without access to health care and education.
In the eighties, the so-called “Ixil Triangle” (Nebaj, Chajul, Cotzal) was the scene of a vile and bloody war: hundreds of villages were destroyed, deleted from the map, thousands of people were massacred, persecuted, harassed…the violence and the terror turned these places into a living hell. The Ixil area, unknown and far away, was transformed into a scar on the geography of this country.
It is not necessary to mention the quality and value of the stories. They speak for themselves. By reading them, one enters the lives of the Ixil, this other Guatemala that still dreams of living in peace.
Marino Cattelan ha scritto a seguito dei suoi viaggi, una serie di storie frutto della sua esperienza personale in un Guatemala profondo, e della artecipazione ad alcunetra le più rappresentative danze tradizionali del paese.
La sua permanenza per molti anni in Guatemala gli ha permesso di conoscere a
fondo gli aspetti più rilevanti e i motivi tradizionali che animano la pratica delle danze rituali che risalgono all’ origine della civiltà americana e agli inizi dell’epoca coloniale.
Le danze tradizionali più importanti nella cosmovisione mesoamericana guatemalteca sono qui presenti, e mostrano la congiunzione di due culture unite storicamente: i Giganti, i Diavoli e la Corsa dei Cavalli di origine spagnola; il Palo Volante e il Ballo del Cervo, di origine mesoamericana, e la Conquista, riflesso culturale di danza nello scontro violento tra due culture.

ammirazione e rispetto con i suoi abitanti, eredi diretti di culture ancestrali americano- europee.
